Jojoba oil is often referred to as an “oil,” but chemically it is more accurately classified as a liquid wax ester. This structural difference is what makes it highly compatible with human skin.
Human sebum is composed largely of wax esters. Because jojoba shares this similarity, it is recognised by the skin in a way that many other plant oils are not.
This compatibility contributes to several functional benefits:
Another important characteristic is its oxidative stability. Unlike many plant oils, jojoba has a long shelf life and is less prone to rancidity due to its molecular structure. This makes it highly suitable for cosmetic formulations requiring long-term stability.
From a formulation perspective, jojoba oil also acts as an excellent carrier, helping to deliver other lipid-soluble active ingredients into the skin more effectively.
Its versatility is why it is frequently used across multiple skin types and product categories, from facial oils to cleansers and moisturisers.
Rather than acting as a treatment oil, jojoba functions more as a regulatory ingredient—supporting the skin’s natural equilibrium rather than altering it.
